Candace Owens defended the police officer who fatally shot Sonya Massey, and Cardi B responded.
In a recent post, Owens made controversial remarks about the shooting, claiming that it was not racially motivated.
On the most recent episode of her show, Owens stated that former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson’s fatal shooting of Massey in her Illinois home was a “mistake.”
“Police officers are human beings, there are mistakes that happen. The idea that now you’re going to use this situation to then try to make Black Americans believe that this happened simply because she was Black is pointedly ridiculous,” Owens stated in the podcast.
She also urged Black Americans to “not take this bait,” noting that “(unarmed) white Americans are more likely to be shot and killed by police officers than Black Americans.”
Cardi B, known for her candid opinions and strong voice, went full blast on the right-wing pundit.
The outspoken rapper took to social media to express her outrage at Owens’ remarks, describing them as insensitive and disrespectful to Massey’s family and the Black community.
“Today [Candace] said something so disturbing about the Sonya Massey case. For you to sit here and say, ‘Oh, not everything is racial. I know that this is sad, but this is not something racial. There’s more white people that get killed by the cops.’ Girl, shut up,” Cardi B wrote on X.
She continued, ” “You don’t feel one little bit of empathy, a little bit of sympathy of how this woman died? There was no argument, there was no conflict, there was no raised voice, and she got shot.”
“He knew in the back of his head because she was a Black woman that, he was going to get away with it. Not only did he think that, but the department thought that because they didn’t tell her son or her father that a cop shot her,” the Bronx rapper added.
The prosecutor’s office released body camera footage on Monday showing former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson threatening to shoot Massey, 36, over a dispute over moving a pot from the stove. He then fires three shots at Massey after she briefly stands up with her hands over her head.
Officer Grayson has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He is currently being held without bond in Sangamon County Jail.
Cardi warned Owens, who is Black, “This could be you one day,” adding, “And it could be even worse because you are the type of person that if a cop stops you, you get sassy at the mouth.” As soon as you get sassy, the muthaf—ka will shoot your a—.”
