In a historic and deeply emotional ceremony, Erica Lee Carter was sworn in to complete the term of her late mother, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, in the 118th Congress.
This marks the first time in U.S. history that a daughter has succeeded her mother in a congressional seat.
After taking the solemn oath of office, Carter addressed her colleagues and constituents with a heartfelt speech.
“As for this moment tonight, while joyful, it is bittersweet, because I wish she were standing at the podium to finish the 118th Congress on her own terms,” Carter began, reflecting on the void left by her mother’s passing.
She continued:
“Nevertheless, there’s much work to do, and it is my honor to finish what she started alongside each of you. I will stand for justice, freedom, economic opportunity, and the dignity for all Americans. I’m so proud to serve all the people of the 18th Congressional District of Texas.”
The late Sheila Jackson Lee was celebrated for her tireless advocacy for civil rights, economic equality, and healthcare reform throughout her decades-long career in Congress.
Carter’s seamless transition into her mother’s seat signals her commitment to carrying forward this enduring legacy.
Community leaders and colleagues have expressed their optimism for Carter’s leadership, citing her dedication to the principles her mother championed and her own background in public service.
Carter inherits not just a seat in Congress but also the responsibility of ensuring justice, freedom, and opportunity for her constituents — values her mother held dear.
