But it was her comment, “Be boys. Be boys. It’s okay. There’s nothing wrong with being a boy. Boys will be boys,” that really sent shockwaves through social media. This remark ignited a firestorm of reactions online, especially as the nation continues to grapple with issues surrounding gender identity and transgender youth. Critics felt she was echoing sentiments that undermine the experiences of transgender individuals. She pointed to a peer-reviewed report from November by the Department of Health and Human Services, which outlined potential long-term risks connected with puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures for minors.
