‘I Was Doing Everything Alone’: Woman Says You Can Be Married and Still Be a ‘Single Mom’

by Gee NY

A viral Instagram video from content creator TeAndra is resonating deeply with women across social media because of how she candidly described the emotional toll of being a “married single mom,” a phrase used to describe spouses who feel unsupported despite being in a marriage.

In the emotional post shared on her Instagram page, @momonthemove_, TeAndra reflected on the years she spent managing parenting responsibilities, household duties, bills, and emotional labor while still married.

“Fun fact about me, I wasn’t always a single mom first, I was a married single mom, and honestly that version of me was more tired,” she said in the video. “People see a ring and they assume you have help, you have a partnership and although it should be that way, it’s not always that way.”

TeAndra explained that despite being married, she handled nearly every aspect of parenting on her own.

“Every appointment, every school form, every birthday reminder, every sick day, every barbershop appointment — the list goes on. It was me,” she said. “And I was doing all this while still holding a full-time job, taking care of home, paying the bills and more.”

Her remarks triggered strong comments online, particularly among Black women who related to the pressure she described — the expectation to endure difficult relationships in the name of family stability.

“I stayed for so long and tolerated so much, not only because I wanted my child to grow up in a two-parent household because I didn’t get the opportunity to do that, but also because as Black women we’re taught to endure, to pray, we’re so strong, ride or die, hold your family down,” she said.

But one of the most poignant moments in the video came when she described realizing that while she was carrying everyone else, no one was supporting her emotionally.

“What nobody was teaching me is what to do when I’m holding everything down, but there’s nobody there holding me too,” TeAndra said.

The creator said that when she officially became a single mother, her responsibilities did not necessarily decrease, but her emotional burden changed dramatically.

“So when I finally became a single mom, life somehow got lighter, not easier, but it got lighter because I finally stopped expecting partnership from someone who only wanted a title,” she explained. “My workload didn’t change, but my expectations and my peace, oh, they did.”

TeAndra added that many people praised how “gracefully” she adjusted to single motherhood, but she says the reality is she had already been living that role for years.

“The truth is, I wasn’t starting over as a single mom. I was just closing a chapter where I was already doing everything alone. I just had a ring on my finger,” she said.

Her video has fueled broader conversations online about emotional labor in marriages, invisible caregiving responsibilities, and the societal pressures many women face to preserve relationships even when they feel unsupported.

“Life got lighter bc you stopped carrying a grown man! Freedom is our birthright!” one person commented.

Many other commenters described the post as painfully relatable, with some calling the phrase “married single mom” an accurate reflection of experiences rarely discussed openly.
