Community Surpassed $23,000 Fundraising Goal To Keep This Woman’s Bookshop From Closing During Black History Month

In a heartwarming display of community support, residents of Collingswood came together to rescue Ida’s Bookshop from closure.

Owner Jeannine A. Cook faced the daunting challenge of a rent increase, prompting her to launch a GoFundMe campaign with the help of Isis Williams, president of the Haddon Township Equity Initiative.

Within just five days, the campaign surpassed its $23,000 goal, securing the bookstore’s future during Black History Month and through 2024.

Cook, known for her commitment to promoting diverse voices and creating safe spaces for writers and activists, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support.

She views bookselling as a form of resistance and self-care, and her bookshops, including Harriett’s Bookshop in Fishtown, serve as hubs for community engagement.

“The community raised it,” said Cook, whose Ida’s location is named after journalist Ida B. Wells. “I’m so grateful. It’s very hard to be creative and innovative when your head is barely above water.”

Despite her success in the literary world, Cook highlighted the ongoing struggles faced by small businesses, particularly against the backdrop of rising real estate costs and economic challenges.

Pip Haxby-Thompson of the Haddon Township Equity Initiative also underscored the importance of preserving local businesses and communities amidst increasing rent pressures.

The rapid response to Cook’s fundraiser reflects the community’s commitment to supporting marginalized businesses and upholding their cultural heritage.

With the financial burden eased, Cook now looks ahead to securing a long-term future for Ida’s Bookshop in Collingswood, with aspirations of purchasing a permanent building.

The outpouring of generosity, with donations ranging from $15 to over $4,000, signifies the strength of community solidarity.

Cook expressed her heartfelt gratitude to supporters, emphasizing the collective effort that saved Ida’s Bookshop and pledging to continue serving the community for generations to come.
