Kamala Harris Revamps ‘Kamala HQ’ Social Media Account, Drawing Mixed Reactions Online

by Xara Aziz

Just a day after relaunching her X account known as Headquarters, former Vice President Kamala Harris has already made a notable tweak, changing the handle from @headquarters67 to @headquarters68. The account, which was previously used to connect with voters during the 2024 campaign cycle, is now being repositioned as a hub for younger audiences.

Harris announced the revamped Kamala HQ on Thursday, describing it as “the new Gen-Z led progressive content hub.” The rebrand appears aimed at keeping her political network and digital presence active, even as questions linger about her next steps in public life.

The initial handle, @headquarters67, quickly caught the attention of online commentators. Some speculated that the numbers were a nod to the “6-7” meme, a piece of internet shorthand that has circulated widely among chronically online teens and young adults as a global inside joke. While it remains unclear whether the reference was intentional, the association was enough to spark commentary and criticism across the platform.

Several conservative commentators mocked the move as an awkward attempt to appropriate youth culture. Post Millennial editor-in-chief Libby Emmons described the rebrand as “cringe,” writing on X that Harris had teased a big announcement only for it to culminate in a social media makeover with “67” embedded in the handle. Other users echoed similar sentiments, suggesting the effort felt overly calculated rather than organic.

The discussion extended beyond partisan commentary and into mainstream media. CNN anchor Dana Bash questioned whether the approach would resonate with younger voters, remarking on air that the “6-7” reference itself already feels dated. Bash added that slang and memes move quickly online, and attempts by political figures to harness them can easily fall flat.

The handle’s shift to @headquarters68 appeared to quietly acknowledge the backlash, though neither Harris nor her team has publicly addressed the change or the meme speculation.

The Kamala HQ revamp comes at a moment of uncertainty for Harris. After losing the 2024 presidential race, she opted out of running for California governor last July, leaving her future political ambitions open-ended. For now, the refreshed social media presence suggests Harris is keeping her connection to supporters alive, even as the broader direction of her next chapter remains undecided.
