Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is raising serious concerns about President Donald Trump’s mental acuity following what she described as an erratic and off-topic speech during West Point’s Memorial Day weekend commencement ceremony.
During an appearance on MSNBC with host Alex Witt, Crockett, known for her sharp critiques of the president, said Republicans need to take a closer look at Trump’s cognitive fitness, particularly after he veered off script while addressing the 2024 graduating class of the United States Military Academy.
“I don’t think those that have gone through West Point expected to have their ‘commander-in-chief’ address them and start talking about trophy wives or how he has so many investigations,” Crockett said. “That is not instilling confidence whatsoever.”
Instead of delivering an inspirational message to the 1,002 cadets poised to become the next generation of military leaders, Trump reportedly launched into a rambling speech that touched on everything from redacted foreign policy to personal grievances and military policies targeting transgender service members.
He controversially dubbed the graduates part of the “golden age” of the U.S. military while hinting at his proposed $1 trillion defense buildup.
Adding fuel to the fire, Trump also broke tradition by skipping the customary handshake line with graduates, sparking criticism online that he left the ceremony to play golf.
“Honestly, our troops deserve better, our graduates deserve better, we as a country deserve better,” Crockett said. “And frankly, if we are ever going to be seen as the world leaders… it is time for Republicans to start calling him out and start questioning his mental acuity.”
Crockett compared Trump’s disorganized speaking style to that of someone in an “insane asylum” and joked:
“Get him some ADHD medicine, if nothing else, because I don’t know where he’s ever gonna go.”
Her comments come on the heels of GOP leaders, including Vice President JD Vance, suggesting that President Joe Biden’s health, recently complicated by an aggressive prostate cancer diagnosis, should be investigated. Crockett, in turn, argued that Trump’s cognitive state should receive the same scrutiny.
But mental health wasn’t Crockett’s only target. She also condemned the Republican-led House for passing a spending bill just before the holiday weekend, calling it “cruel” and out of touch with everyday Americans.
“It does nothing for low- and middle-class Americans but guarantees those top earners being able to have their next trophy wife or buy their next yacht, or get their next plane,” she said.
