At a press conference hosted by the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Jasmine Crockett delivered one of the sharpest Democratic critiques yet of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The outspoken Congresswoman is warning that the Trump administration’s actions are not only sweeping and punitive but are placing transgender migrants at particular risk.

Crockett, a Texas Democrat known for her blunt delivery, said the public cannot trust the administration’s reporting on what is happening inside detention centers, accusing officials of deliberately stripping trans migrants of their “personhood” and suppressing the truth.

“If they don’t want to report accurate job numbers, honey, I don’t expect to get accurate information about trans folk,” Crockett said. “This administration has been very clear about taking away the personhood of trans people — not just through ICE, but through passport classifications as well.”

A Call for Transparency — and a Warning

The Oversight Committee unveiled a new public dashboard aimed at documenting abuses, disappearances, and medical neglect inside immigration detention. Crockett framed the tool as necessary because, she said, information from federal agencies has become unreliable and incomplete.

“We need to know who’s being disappeared. We need to know whether they are missing their medications,” she said. “Trans people are loved too. Their loved ones deserve to know what’s happening to them.”

Crockett encouraged families, advocacy groups, and migrants themselves to report incidents, stating that the committee is trying to fill the information vacuum left by the administration.

“It is not easy to trust a government that is attacking everybody. I get it — I don’t trust them,” she said. “But you can trust us.”

A Broader Pattern of Policy Shifts

Crockett’s comments come amid growing Democratic alarm over Trump’s aggressive return to raids, detentions, mass deportation and efforts to restrict how transgender Americans are recognized on federal documents. LGBTQ+ legal groups have warned that passport and ICE classification policies could subject trans migrants to heightened danger — especially in detention facilities with a history of abuse claims.

The congresswoman’s remarks cut to the heart of those fears: that vulnerable people may be suffering in silence, without public visibility or access to medication critical to gender transition.

Commentary: The Stakes Are Enormous

Political battles over border enforcement often flatten real lives into abstractions. Crockett’s intervention forces a different focus, one centered on the people most likely to be overlooked, mistreated, or erased by an enforcement system operating with little transparency.

The fight is no longer only about immigration numbers; it’s about who counts, who is seen, and who is protected.
