Oprah Gail Winfrey (born January 29, 1954) is an American media mogul, talk show host, actress, producer, author, and philanthropist.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential women in the world, she rose from a childhood marked by poverty and trauma in rural Mississippi to become the richest Black woman in America and a transformative figure in television and culture.
Born to a teenage single mother, Winfrey endured a difficult early life, including abuse and instability. She found refuge with her father in Nashville, where she excelled in school and began her broadcasting career at age 17. By 19, she was co-anchoring the evening news. In 1984, she moved to Chicago to host AM Chicago, which she quickly turned into the top-rated talk show in the city. Renamed The Oprah Winfrey Show, it ran for 25 years (1986–2011) and became the highest-rated talk show in television history.
Winfrey revolutionized daytime television with her intimate, confessional style, focusing on self-improvement, spirituality, literature, and social issues.
