Rep. Jasmine Crockett Accuses Republicans of Selective Oversight, Cites DOJ Subpoena Dispute

by Gee NY

U.S. Representative Jasmine Crockett has accused Republican lawmakers of applying congressional rules selectively, arguing that oversight mechanisms are being “weaponized” for partisan advantage while ignored when they implicate allies.

In a statement posted on Instagram and reinforced by a video message, the Texas Democrat said Republicans only insist on “following the rules” when it benefits them politically, but fall silent when those same rules “cut both ways.”

“Pam Bondi and the DOJ have failed to comply with the subpoena and discharge petition — and y’all have nothing but excuses for them,” Crockett wrote, calling for what she described as serious oversight and accountability rather than “gamesmanship.”

Allegations of Unequal Application of the Law

In the accompanying video, Crockett said Democrats often act “in good faith” by adhering to established rules and legal standards, but claimed the current political environment rewards those who ignore norms without consequence.

“We are supposed to be about checks and balances,” she said, arguing that accountability should apply equally regardless of party affiliation, wealth, or social status.

Crockett warned that selective enforcement of oversight powers undermines public confidence in democratic institutions.

She also referenced the broader debate over subpoenas and witness testimony, suggesting that partisan considerations have distorted congressional investigations.

Crockett argued that accountability should be consistent whether scrutiny is directed at Democrats, Republicans, or high-profile public figures.

Broader Context of Congressional Oversight Tensions

Crockett’s remarks come amid heightened tensions on Capitol Hill over congressional subpoenas, executive branch compliance, and the limits of legislative oversight.

Disputes over enforcement have become increasingly common, particularly when investigations intersect with politically sensitive issues.

The congresswoman also criticized what she described as uneven support for law enforcement, contrasting Republican rhetoric on policing with their response to the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

She pointed to ongoing concerns raised by lawmakers and advocacy groups about accountability for those events.

Call for Equal Accountability

Crockett concluded by urging lawmakers to recommit to the principle that the law should be applied evenly, regardless of political consequences.

“It should not matter whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, independent, rich, poor, or an immigrant,” she said. “If we only apply the rules to one side, that’s how everything goes off the rails.”

Her comments are likely to further fuel debate over the scope and integrity of congressional oversight as lawmakers prepare for upcoming investigations and hearings.
