Texas Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to block a Republican-backed redistricting plan say their fight is far from over.

Speaking from Illinois, where more than 50 Texas Democrats relocated in early August to deny the legislature quorum, State Rep. Lauren Ashley Simmons criticized Governor Greg Abbott for prioritizing partisan maps over urgent disaster relief.

“Our governor, who has given himself immense powers to do and act as he pleases, could act right now,” Simmons said. “He could move resources and funds to help … he should have done it the day the disaster happened.”

Her comments came as Abbott vowed to continue calling special sessions until Republicans secure new congressional maps, which could give the GOP five additional seats. Democrats argue the proposed redistricting plan would disenfranchise Black and Brown voters, while Republicans insist their absence is obstructing flood recovery efforts across the state.

While in Illinois, Simmons and her colleagues have met with local Democrats and participated in events spotlighting reproductive rights, voting rights, and minority representation. She praised Illinois residents for their support, saying the welcome offered in Chicago and surrounding communities has given the delegation “hope” that progress is possible.

But the stay has not been without risks. Lawmakers faced a bomb threat at their St. Charles conference center on Aug. 6 and continue to face the threat of arrest if they return to Texas. Governor Abbott has ordered state authorities to detain absent lawmakers, while some officials have floated fines of up to $500 a day.

Despite these challenges, Simmons stressed the necessity of the standstill.

“We know the risks. We know the dangers. We signed up for this,” fellow State Rep. Jon Rosenthal said. “Whatever comes, we are working for the people that we represent, for the people of Texas … to ignite this national conversation. Because what happens in Texas doesn’t stay in Texas.”

The Texas Democrats’ actions highlight a growing national battle over redistricting, reproductive rights, and the balance of power between state executives and legislatures. With Abbott showing no signs of backing down, Simmons and her colleagues insist their work in Illinois is not an abandonment of duty, but an act of resistance to preserve fair representation.
