At the 2025 Met Gala, themed “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” Teyana Taylor delivered a powerful sartorial statement that paid homage to Harlem and the legacy of Black dandyism.

Collaborating with Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter, Taylor’s ensemble was a masterclass in cultural storytelling and personal expression.

Taylor’s outfit featured a custom burgundy zoot suit-inspired ensemble, reflecting her preference for suits over dresses. The look included a pinstriped suit, a red velvet waistcoat, and a long frock coat, complemented by a dramatic cape and fedora. The ensemble was adorned with intricate details such as feathers, lace, crystals, and a feather-adorned hat with a matching du-rag. The edge of her cape featured an embroidered tribute to her 2018 song, “Rose in Harlem,” adding a personal dimension.

The theme of the 2025 Met Gala, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” centered on the rich cultural heritage of Black fashion, particularly Black dandyism—a movement where Black individuals used fashion as a form of self-expression and resistance against societal limitations. This cultural movement, dating back to the 18th century, saw Black people adopting and reinterpreting European fashion styles to assert their identity and challenge prevailing stereotypes

Taylor’s ensemble was more than just a fashion statement; it was a celebration of Black history and individuality. By embracing the aesthetics of Black dandyism and infusing her personal narrative, she highlighted the enduring impact of Black culture on fashion. Her look stood out as a testament to the power of clothing as a medium for storytelling and cultural expression.

In a night filled with bold interpretations of the theme, Taylor’s outfit was a standout, seamlessly blending historical references with contemporary flair. Her collaboration with Ruth E. Carter resulted in a look that was both visually striking and deeply meaningful, underscoring the significance of Black dandyism in the evolution of fashion.

Teyana Taylor’s appearance at the 2025 Met Gala not only honored the theme but also reinforced the importance of embracing one’s heritage and using fashion as a tool for cultural dialogue. Her ensemble served as a powerful reminder of the rich tapestry of Black fashion and its influence on the global fashion landscape.
