Lizzo’s latest Instagram post has sparked a heated debate among fans after making a striking statement about her past self.

The Grammy-winning singer, known for championing self-love and body positivity, recently shocked fans when she spray-painted the words “Bye B*tch” over an old image of herself from her Special album cover.

The moment, captured in a video shared on her social media, immediately sent the internet into a frenzy.

While some saw it as a powerful statement marking the end of an era, others felt betrayed, accusing the singer of contradicting the body-positive message she once stood for. While some defend Lizzo’s right to evolve and change, others argue that her initial message of self-love should have been unconditional and not contingent on weight.

Lizzo’s artistic choice appears to symbolize the closing of one chapter and the start of another, likely tied to a new music era. In another Instagram post, she officially bid farewell to her Special album, further fueling speculation that this bold act was simply a rebranding move, as many artists do when transitioning into a new creative phase.

“It’s the end of a very Special era. This album was my strut back into society after a hard 2020 & 2021. I wanted to help people turn up the music, turn down the lights, and get a feeling they’ll be alright. I wanted to remind people of how they may be broken but still perfect in their own way. 12 songs, 68 shows, 14 countries, 3 continents, and nearly a million voices later, we saw our specialness.

“We got through it together. I’m proud of the accolades, the Grammys, the Emmys, the Platinum plaque… but I’m most proud of the Legacy I’m leaving this world— lyrics that uplift you, music with real instruments, a reminder to dance, and that it’s okay to cry… and high vibrations! I thank God every day that this is my job, and I don’t take it lightly. Thank YOU, listener, lover, learner, lizzbian. Xoxo,” the About Damn Time singer wrote on Instagram the day before the viral “vandalizing” video.

Nonetheless, many fans had a different perspective. Some felt offended, contending that Lizzo’s message of self-acceptance had become compromised by what they viewed as her “erasing” her past self. Detractors raised doubts about the authenticity of her advocacy for plus-size confidence, with some feeling disheartened that she appeared to be moving away from the image that originally characterized her empowerment journey.

“It’s disappointing to see her ‘destroy’ her old image after preaching self-love when she was bigger,” one fan wrote. “It sends mixed messages.”

While the post has sparked controversy, it’s worth noting that Lizzo has not explicitly commented on the meaning behind the video.
