Whoopi Goldberg delighted fans with a rare public appearance alongside her daughter, Alexandrea “Alex” Martin Dean, at the launch of her new cannabis line.
The event, dubbed “A Night With Whoopi,” took place on July 20 and showcased the close bond between the iconic actress and her daughter.
Goldberg, 68, and Alex, 51, were all smiles as they posed for photos on the red carpet, radiating joy and pride.
The View moderator welcomed Alex into the world at 18 with her then-husband, Alvin Martin, a drug counselor.
Goldberg had already faced significant challenges, including dropping out of high school, when Alex was born in 1973.
In an interview with TheGrio.com, Alex reminisced about their early years before Goldberg’s rise to stardom.
“I know what it’s like with the food stamps because my mom has her (welfare) cards framed,” Alex shared. “I remember we had the one room space and we slept in the bed together.”
Alex has made a name for herself as an actor and film producer. She has had a unique love story, marrying the same man, Bernard Dean, three times.
The couple, who divorced twice, remarried in 2011 and share two children, Mason (born in 1998) and Jerzey (born in 1995). Alex also has a daughter, Amara, whom she welcomed at age 15.
Goldberg’s memoir, “Bits and Pieces,” sheds light on Alex’s early pregnancy.
“Years later, Alexandrea told me that she thinks she got pregnant as a teenager because she wanted one person in her life who didn’t know who Whoopi Goldberg was,” Goldberg revealed.
When introducing Alex as a guest on “The View” in 2016, Goldberg described her daughter as “one of the most trustworthy and loyal people I know.” She added:
“She is somebody who makes me laugh. We can talk to each other any time during the day or night. I just like her a lot.”
Goldberg also enjoys a close relationship with her grandchildren.
Amara, an artist, told Essence:
“Me and my grandma are super close. She’s everything. She wants us to be real people. Stuff is not handed to us.”
