A Texas man has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison for the abduction and sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in a harrowing case that spanned from San Antonio to Long Beach, California.
Steven Robert Sablan, 63, of Cleburne, Texas, pleaded guilty to kidnapping in January 2024 and has been ordered to pay $1,158 in restitution.
The disturbing incident began in San Antonio, where Sablan abducted the teenager and transported her to California, threatening her with a firearm to maintain control.
During the cross-state journey, the girl was sexually assaulted, according to court documents.
The ordeal came to an end on July 9, 2023, when the teen was rescued outside a laundromat in Long Beach.
A vigilant bystander noticed the girl holding a torn piece of paper with the words “Help Me!” written in red ink while sitting in a silver Nissan Sentra.
The bystander immediately alerted authorities. When officers arrived, the girl silently mouthed “help,” prompting them to intervene and free her from the vehicle.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph T. McNally praised the efforts of federal and local law enforcement in securing justice for the victim.
“The 35-year sentence imposed ensures this defendant will not have the opportunity to victimize children,” McNally said. “There is nothing as important as protecting our young people.”
Sablan, who has been in federal custody since his arrest, admitted to kidnapping the girl and using a firearm to intimidate her during the trip.
