A mother is taking legal action against American Airlines following the tragic death of her 14-year-old son during a flight, seeking justice and answers.
The heartbreaking incident unfolded in 2022 when Kevin Greenidge and his family were returning to New York from a vacation in Honduras. Soon after takeoff, Kevin lost consciousness, setting off a series of distressing events.
According to the lawsuit, the flight crew’s response to the family’s call for help was delayed, and there were difficulties operating the defibrillator or it was malfunctioning.
Despite efforts to assist Kevin, his condition did not improve, leading to the flight being diverted to Cancún.
Sadly, Kevin was pronounced dead upon arrival at a hospital in Cancún.
Initially filed in New York in 2023, the lawsuit was refiled in Texas on Monday, May 13, after American Airlines challenged the case’s jurisdiction, seeking to move it to the state where the airline is headquartered.
In an emotional video shared by her legal team, Melissa Arzu, Kevin’s mother, expressed her frustration, stating:
“After Kevin died, I never heard from American Airlines again. It made me feel hopeless. I want answers from American Airlines.”
According to allegations within the lawsuit, the flight crew was reportedly not trained to use the specific type of defibrillator onboard the aircraft.
Additionally, it claims that the defibrillator failed to administer a shock but repeatedly advised the continuation of CPR.
Hannah Crowe, Arzu’s attorney, highlighted:
The lawsuit seeks approximately $150,000 in compensation for the family’s devastating loss.
Responding to inquiries, American Airlines conveyed condolences, stating:
“Our thoughts are with Mr. Greenidge’s loved ones.”
The airline declined further comments, citing ongoing legal proceedings.
