Erica Banks’ #BussItChallenge Continues to Dominate Social Media

by Shine My Crown Staff

1501 Certified rapper Erica Banks’ hit single “Buss It” made a resurgence after a TikTok star put her own special sauce to the track by creating the now-viral #bussitchallenge.

The track was initially released last summer — but in the new challenge, women of color are beginning their videos, barefaced, with no makeup… sometimes in bathrobes or onesies looking “homely” at times as a sample from Nelly’s 2002 smash single, “Hot In Herre” plays.

The clip then cuts to the ladies looking uber glam, dressed to the nines and ready for a fun night out as Banks’ own single plays.

Oh yeah… and there’s the twerking.

As far as viral challenges go, this may be one of the most fun endeavors. I mean, who doesn’t want to look glamorous and who doesn’t like a good twerk?

Several celebrities have joined in on the action. Reginae Carter. Tracee Ellis Ross. Monica. More recently, Halle Bailey from the iconic musical duo Chloe x Halle broke the internet with her flawless offering as did Jordyn Woods.

Banks’ says she is overwhelmed by the success of the challenge.

“Buss It,” has managed to nap a top 10 placement on iTunes’ top 10 for hip-hop/rap, and the single has racked up more than 15 million streams on Spotify alone. Banks has also landed her first Billboard Hot 100 single with the song.

“It’s just overwhelming a little bit,” the rapper said in an interview with BAZAAR.com. “I’m glad it’s happening. But it’s just crazy for me, because it’s new.” She went on to add, “It’s been a week, and the video has jumped from 5,000 to a million in just over seven days, it’s crazy.”

We love the challenge.
