Since her historic election last November, Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) has quickly established herself as a steadfast opponent of the Republican agenda and a vocal advocate for consumer protections and government accountability. In her first year on Capitol Hill, she has consistently pushed back on policies she says undermine scientific research, public health, national security, and the well-being of marginalized communities.
Speaking during the 54th Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., Alsobrooks warned that “Medicare and Medicaid are under attack,” adding that it has been “sobering to see the issues that our country continues to grapple with.”
Alsobrooks has taken a particularly firm stance on health leadership under the Trump administration. During confirmation hearings, she sharply questioned Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., challenging his position on vaccines and condemning his inaccurate and racially offensive assertion that African Americans have “stronger immune systems.” She later called for Kennedy’s resignation after his department imposed cuts to cancer research and amid a rise in measles and tuberculosis. In an August statement, she described him as “a threat to the health and well-being of every American citizen.”
This spring, Alsobrooks also urged Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to step down following the disclosure of classified information over text. At a rally outside the National Institutes of Health in May, she denounced what she called the administration’s dishonesty and lack of integrity: “Are you sick of it? The lies, the cruelty, the incompetence, the immorality… Are you sick of Donald Trump and RFK Jr.?”
The former Prince George’s County executive—who significantly reduced violent crime during her tenure—has also criticized Trump’s takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and deployment of the National Guard in D.C. “The city of Washington, D.C., belongs to the great people of Washington, D.C., not the occupant of the White House,” she said.
Alsobrooks has continued advancing economic opportunity, calling it “the number one priority” for Maryland families. Her first bill, the Tariff Transparency Act, sought to evaluate the impact of tariffs on consumers. She later co-sponsored legislation to prevent elected officials from profiting from crypto assets and championed the GENIUS Act, a landmark bill establishing consumer protections in the fast-growing stablecoin marketplace.
“As more Marylanders participate in this emerging market, we must not drag our feet,” she said. “I am particularly proud of securing protections for consumers and community banks.”
