Megan Thee Stallion found herself at the center of an unexpected online debate after a viral clip showing an anime character using exaggerated twerking moves as a weapon circulated over the weekend.

The footage, which some believed was a sneak peek of her upcoming anime series Hotties, was shown briefly at BlerDCon, the Black Nerd Convention in National Landing, Virginia.

The preview, reportedly about 30 seconds long, featured the animated character fighting enemies with moves that included using her backside as a weapon, which some viewers referred to as “twerking superpowers.” Attendees shared the clip on social media, quickly framing it as a first look at Hotties. Within hours, the video racked up millions of views and sparked debate online.

Reaction to the clip was swift and critical. Commenters expressed disappointment, particularly members of the Black anime community who had supported the project since it was first announced. Many felt the clip presented an exaggerated, hypersexualized depiction that did not align with the representation they had anticipated from Megan’s anime series.

Hours after the clip circulated widely, Megan Thee Stallion addressed the controversy on X. She clarified that the footage was not from Hotties, but instead from an unreleased music video for her 2022 album Traumazine track, Gift & A Curse. “Everybody RELAX. Y’all DO NOT know what my show looks like yet,” she wrote, emphasizing that the viral snippet did not represent her anime series.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Hotties anime is currently in development with Carl Jones, the producer behind The Boondocks, and is expected to eventually stream on Amazon Prime Video. Megan has shared updates about recording the voice for her character and has teased elements of the show, including storytelling, character arcs, and action sequences.

No official release date for Hotties has been announced. For now, fans will have to wait for an official preview to see what Megan’s anime series will truly look like.
