A woman’s wild party held to celebrate an immigration milestone sparked an online backlash recently, and now she is pushing back. She’s justifying the Celebration.
Victoria Azubuike Kathrein took to Instagram to address the hundreds of “hate comments” following her green card celebration, saying she had good reason to do so.
“The hate from my green card party… 100s of comments saying it’s too much…” she wrote, before explaining the deeper meaning behind the event.
In a video accompanying the post, Kathrein said the celebration represented far more than a festive gathering—it marked the end of a stressful and uncertain immigration journey.
“You Don’t Play About Immigration”

Reflecting on advice from her mother, Kathrein emphasized the gravity of the process.
“My mum told me there are two things you do not want to play about with—homelessness and immigration,” she said.
She explained that going through the immigration system firsthand gave her a new perspective on the emotional and financial toll it can take.
“It is time-consuming, it is expensive, the uncertainty, the anxiety… it is a lot,” she said.
A Personal Victory Worth Celebrating
Kathrein revealed that while her own green card process took approximately four months, she is aware that many others wait years—or even decades—for the same outcome.
For her, the celebration was an intentional expression of gratitude and relief.
“This wasn’t just a party—it was gratitude, it was relief, it was everything I prayed for coming together,” she said.
Despite criticism, she remained unapologetic:
“So yes, it is too much, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Online Reactions Reflect Broader Divide
The viral moment has sparked conversation about how people choose to mark personal milestones, particularly those tied to complex systems like immigration.
Supporters argue that such achievements deserve recognition given the challenges involved, while critics maintain that public displays of celebration can appear excessive.
Kathrein’s response, however, underscores a broader sentiment shared by many immigrants—that reaching legal residency status is not just administrative, but deeply personal.
Looking Ahead
Unfazed by the backlash, Kathrein hinted that her next milestone will be celebrated even more boldly.
“Get ready for the citizenship party,” she said. “We are going all out for it.”
Her story continues to resonate online, highlighting the emotional realities behind immigration journeys, and the differing perspectives on how those journeys should be honored.
