Allyson Felix, renowned as the most decorated track and field athlete in history, is addressing the challenges faced by athlete mothers.
Ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the retired sprinter and mother of two is advocating for better support for Olympic moms, drawing from her own experiences.
Felix, holder of an impressive record with 20 World Championship medals and 11 Olympic medals, including seven golds, has partnered with Pampers to establish the inaugural Pampers Nursery within the Athletes Village at the Paris Olympics.
This nursery aims to provide a nurturing environment where Olympic mothers can bond, nurse, and play with their babies, offering respite amidst the pressures of competition.
“I understand firsthand how challenging it can be to compete at the highest level after becoming a mother. When I joined the Athletes Commission of the IOC, I wanted to be a voice for athlete moms and alleviate some of the stress they face during competition,” Felix explained in an interview with CBS Morning.
Located centrally in the Athlete Village Plaza, the Pampers Nursery will offer athletes a private space to spend quality time with their infants, Felix highlighted.
“This initiative sends a powerful message to women that they can embrace motherhood and excel in their athletic careers without compromise,” she said.
Additionally, Felix expressed gratitude for a significant $20 million grant from Melinda French Gates aimed at supporting Black maternal health. Felix described feeling deeply honored and motivated by French Gates’ recognition of her advocacy efforts.
Looking ahead to the Paris Olympics, Felix, attending in a new role after two decades of competition, shared mixed emotions of nostalgia and anticipation.
“It’s a different experience for me this time, bringing my whole family and enjoying the games with less pressure. I’m eager for this new chapter,” she remarked.
To first-time Olympians, Felix offered simple yet profound advice:
“Embrace this moment. Representing your country at the Olympics is a unique opportunity. Take it all in and give it your absolute best.”
