In a tragic incident on July 6, 2024, Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson fatally shot 36-year-old Illinois mother Sonya Massey inside her home.

Massey had called 911, fearing an intruder was in her Springfield-area residence.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing Massey’s family, told CNN that Grayson and another deputy responded to her call at approximately 12:50 a.m.

Upon entering the home to ensure it was safe, a dispute arose over a pot of hot water, leading Grayson to draw his firearm and shoot Massey in the face.

Prosecutors state that during the altercation, Massey had her hands up and apologized before Grayson fired.

Massey remained unarmed at the time.

The Illinois State Police investigation concluded that Grayson’s use of deadly force was unjustified.

A Sangamon County grand jury indicted Grayson on three counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct.

Grayson pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was denied pretrial release. He has since been fired from the sheriff’s department.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland promised the pursuit of justice for Massey’s family, stating that the charges against the police officer represent an important first step in efforts to get justice for the family.

Governor JB Pritzker expressed his outrage and sorrow, calling for community healing and condemning the deputy’s actions.

Officials will publicly release body camera footage of the incident next week, providing further clarity on the tragic events.

“This news is a step toward justice for Sonya’s loved ones, especially her children, who have endured unimaginable pain and suffering since they were notified of this tragedy. We remain committed to uncovering the truth of what happened and identifying the failures that allowed this tragic death to occur,” Crump said in a Wednesday release.

Crump’s office will hold Massey’s funeral on Friday morning.
