Actress and singer Keke Palmer, 31, is opening up about the challenges of navigating a toxic relationship in the public eye and how media coverage of her personal life overshadowed her professional accomplishments.
In a recent cover story for The Cut, Palmer candidly discussed her painful breakup with ex-partner Darius Jackson, 30, and the fallout from a viral disagreement over her outfit choice for an Usher concert in 2023. The moment became a turning point, prompting Palmer to confront the “toxic dynamic” in their relationship.
Addressing Toxic Relationships
“There’s a sensationalization that happens with that word [domestic violence],” Palmer shared. “But there really are often no other words to describe such a toxic dynamic.”
Palmer elaborated on the challenges of identifying harmful behavior:
“You can say, ‘I know you’re not like that,’ or ‘I know it’s not like this,’ or ‘I know you’re a good person deep down.’ You can make so many excuses for behavior that could have stopped.”
Frustration with Media Coverage
Palmer expressed frustration over the media’s fixation on her personal struggles, which she felt detracted from her professional achievements.
“I hated it,” she admitted. “It was my personal junk. It didn’t deserve a place in the center of something that I worked very hard to make encouraging and empowering.”
Now, Palmer says she has found clarity and is taking control of her narrative:
“When it was happening, it was horrible because I could not get to the message of the story in real time. Now, I’m able to articulate it, and I’m able to say what the story will be.”
Legal Actions and Co-Parenting
In November 2023, Palmer was granted a restraining order against Jackson after submitting evidence of abuse, including video footage of an altercation. Despite the tumultuous breakup, the two are now focused on co-parenting their 1-year-old son, Leo.
“Our relationship has improved after the split,” Palmer noted, adding that they are committed to “peacefully” raising their child together.
The duo recently captured the hearts of fans by coming together to celebrate Darius’s graduation from the army.

Palmer also delved into her experiences in her memoir, Master of Me: The Secret to Controlling Your Narrative, released in November 2023.
In it, she describes her breakup with Jackson as “the hardest thing” she has ever faced, but she emphasizes her resilience and growth.
Palmer continues to focus on her career and her role as an advocate for empowerment and self-awareness.
