Morgan Price, a sophomore at Fisk University, is basking in the glow of her historic achievement as the first gymnast from a historically Black college or university (HBCU) to secure a collegiate national title.

In an interview with ABC News’ Good Morning America, Price expressed her elation at the groundbreaking win, describing it as “really amazing” and overwhelmed by the significance of her accomplishment.

Price clinched the 2024 USA Gymnastics Women’s Collegiate National Championships all-around title on April 12, competing in floor exercise, uneven bars, balance beam, and vault.

Her outstanding performance earned her an overall score of 39.225, catapulting her into the annals of gymnastics history.

At first, Price was also going to attend the University of Arkansas but switched to Fisk University after hearing the HBCU was going to start a collegiate gymnastics program.

“Growing up, I learned the importance of HBCUs and just being able to go to an HBCU, it’s an honor. So I really wanted to bring my talents to an HBCU,” Price explained of her decision.

Fisk gymnastics head coach Corrinne Tarver lauded Price’s achievement, highlighting the remarkable dedication and talent required to excel in all four disciplines.

Tarver also spoke about the rarity of athletes who compete in all-around events, underscoring Price’s exceptional abilities and unwavering commitment to her sport.

For Price, the road to victory was paved with determination and hard work. Reflecting on her journey, she acknowledged the disappointment of falling short at nationals last year but remained steadfast in her pursuit of success.

Drawing inspiration from her family’s athletic legacy, which includes her late father’s career as a professional baseball player and her sister’s endeavors in collegiate gymnastics, Price embraced the challenge with renewed vigor.

Price’s decision to attend Fisk University stemmed from her desire to contribute to the burgeoning gymnastics program at an HBCU.

Recognizing the importance of HBCUs in fostering educational opportunities for Black Americans, Price was eager to make her mark and inspire future generations of young athletes.

Looking ahead, Price aspires to emulate Coach Tarver’s trailblazing legacy by pursuing a career in coaching at an HBCU.

With her sights set on empowering young girls, particularly young Black girls, Price hopes to serve as a beacon of hope and encouragement, urging them to persevere in the face of adversity and never relinquish their dreams.

Fisk University, which launched its gymnastics team in 2022 under Coach Tarver’s leadership, continues to champion diversity and excellence in collegiate athletics.

As Price’s groundbreaking achievement reverberates throughout the gymnastics community, her triumph serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of HBCUs in shaping the future of sports.
