National Bar Association Backs Letitia James After Trump DOJ Case Against Her Dismissed

The National Bar Association (NBA), the country’s oldest and largest network of Black attorneys and judges, is standing firmly behind New York Attorney General Letitia “Tish” James following the dismissal of a case that had challenged her conduct in office.

In a forceful statement, the NBA called the ruling “a powerful vindication of the rule of law” and warned against the growing trend of using the courts to wage political battles.

The case — dismissed this week on procedural and constitutional grounds — had sought to accuse James of overreach tied to her high-profile enforcement actions. But the court’s ruling found the claims legally insufficient and lacking merit. While details of the suit were not the NBA’s focus, its leadership made clear what the outcome represents.

“This confirms what we have said from the beginning: the justice system must never be used as a political weapon,” NBA President Ashley L. Upkins said. The group praised the court for upholding constitutional principles and reinforcing checks and balances, calling the dismissal an important moment for democratic integrity.

A High-Profile Attorney General Under Scrutiny

Letitia James, the first Black woman to serve as New York Attorney General, has often drawn intense political fire for her investigations into powerful figures and institutions.

Her office has pursued major cases involving civil rights, public corruption, housing discrimination, public fraud, and corporate accountability. That visibility has also made her a frequent target of political lawsuits, many of which legal experts have described as retaliatory or unfounded.

The NBA’s statement underscored that point, saying attempts to undermine James through “meritless and procedurally flawed actions” not only distract from legitimate public oversight but also weaken public confidence in the judiciary.

Freedom and Justice Cannot Wait

The association — founded in 1925 after Black lawyers were excluded from the American Bar Association — framed this moment as part of a broader fight to preserve judicial independence. It urged attorneys, judges, and members of the public to remain vigilant as political pressure on courts and prosecutors intensifies nationwide.

“Attorney General James has shown steadfast courage and commitment to her oath of office,” Upkins said. “The law demands fairness, and today the Court has answered that call.”

The NBA’s message reflects a larger conversation happening across the legal community: how to safeguard the justice system from weaponization while ensuring public officials can carry out their duties without intimidation or interference.

For James, the dismissal doesn’t just close a legal chapter — it strengthens her standing at a moment when state attorneys general are playing increasingly consequential roles in national policy, voting rights, consumer protection, and civil rights enforcement.

And for the National Bar Association, this was more than a statement. It was a reminder — delivered in clear, uncompromising language — that protecting the rule of law isn’t optional. It’s the foundation of the democracy they’ve spent a century defending.
