President Biden announced on Sunday that he was withdrawing from the 2024 race, capping a weeks-long pressure campaign by fellow Democrats that began in earnest after his widely criticized debate performance in late June.
“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for my term,” Mr. Biden wrote in a social media post.
Following the announcement, Biden wrote in a separate post that he is endorsing his vice president, Kamala Harris, for the Democratic presidential nomination.
“Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump,” he wrote. “Let’s do this.”
