A heartbreaking incident unfolded in the 2300 block of Forest Avenue, leading to charges against the mother and aunt of a 1-year-old girl after the child’s unexplained death.
The Jackson Police Department responded to a distressing call around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, involving the lifeless body of a baby girl.
Upon reaching the scene, officers discovered the deceased child and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The child’s mother, identified as 28-year-old Lagayla Haynes, informed officers that she had rushed her daughter to the University of Mississippi Medical Center when the child became unresponsive.
Despite immediate medical attention, the child was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Chief Joseph Wade of the Jackson Police Department revealed disturbing details about the case. Wade stated that visible bruising around the child’s neck indicated signs of severe physical abuse.
He described the child as having been “beaten and abused,” suggesting that the child may have succumbed to the injuries approximately 10 hours before being taken to the hospital.
As a result of the ongoing investigation, Lagayla Haynes and her sister, 23-year-old Samara Smith, now face charges of felony child neglect in connection with the tragic incident.
The charges may be subject to updates pending further interviews with witnesses by JPD detectives.
The news of this distressing case has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting a closer examination of child welfare and protection measures.
Authorities are urging anyone with information related to the case to come forward, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability.
As the investigation continues, local residents express their condolences for the loss of the young life and await further developments in the legal proceedings against the mother and aunt involved in this tragic event.
