Black Woman-Owned Aeroponic Farm Thrives in Southern Virginia

by Gee NY

Full Circle Bloom, an innovative aeroponic farm founded by Ashley Richardson, is rapidly transforming the agricultural landscape of Southern Virginia.

Located in Kenbridge, the veteran-owned farm is a shining example of how technology, sustainability, and community engagement can intersect to create lasting change in farming practices.

In a sector where Black farmers are significantly underrepresented, Richardson is breaking new ground with Full Circle Bloom.

Her journey, transitioning from a Senior Project Manager and Consultant in Washington, D.C., to a pioneering farmer in Southern Virginia, highlights her determination and vision to make a difference in the agricultural industry.

Full Circle Bloom specializes in growing a variety of high-quality, pesticide-free produce year-round using aeroponic technology. This advanced method involves suspending plant roots in the air and misting them with a nutrient-rich solution, which accelerates plant growth, increases yields, and reduces environmental impact compared to traditional farming techniques.

“Our mission at Full Circle Bloom is to provide fresh, healthy food and make it accessible to everyone in the community,” says Richardson. “We believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food, regardless of their background or circumstances.”

The farm’s influence stretches beyond agriculture. Full Circle Bloom partners with local schools, restaurants, and businesses, offering fresh, locally sourced produce, farm tours, and educational programs. In an effort to address food insecurity in the region, Full Circle Bloom has donated more than 25,000 pounds of produce to schools, food banks, and community organizations, helping to feed those in need.

Recently, Full Circle Bloom received support from the Microsoft Southern Virginia Community Fund and the Tractor Supply Farmer Veteran Coalition. With these new investments, the farm is launching an exciting initiative called “Nourishing Communities Through Innovation,” aimed at increasing food access, promoting sustainable agriculture, and educating the community.

The farm’s commitment to innovation and community impact has earned recognition from industry leaders. Full Circle Bloom was selected for an interview to join the Acres Program, a National Minority Supplier Development Council initiative designed to help Black-owned agricultural businesses access new markets and funding opportunities.

Through Ashley Richardson’s leadership, Full Circle Bloom has become a beacon of hope and change in Southern Virginia, offering a model of sustainable and inclusive agriculture.

Her dedication to providing healthy food to underserved communities and supporting local farmers is reshaping the region’s food system and inspiring others to join the movement for a more equitable agricultural future.
