Lizzo shocked fans after revealing that she waited until her 30s to lose her virginity after making a childhood promise to herself tied to winning a Grammy Award.
The “Cuz I Love You” singer shared the story during a March 31 appearance on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast, where she reflected on being a “late bloomer,” and the years she spent keeping that detail to herself.
Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, explained that the decision wasn’t random but rooted in a pact she made when she was younger. “I just promised myself when I was younger that I wouldn’t have sex until I won a Grammy,” she said. “I’m so dead ass.”
That promise eventually aligned with a major turning point in her career. In 2020, Lizzo won her first three Grammy Awards, taking home honors for Best Pop Solo Performance, Best Traditional R&B Performance, and Best Urban Contemporary Album at the ceremony that year. She clarified that she did not lose her virginity on the night of the Grammys itself, but it did happen within the same year she earned those awards, marking the fulfillment of the promise she had carried for years.
Looking back, Lizzo said part of the experience also came with emotional weight. Although she is widely known for championing sexual expression and body positivity, she admitted she once felt embarrassed about her personal timeline. “It was so embarrassing,” she said, describing how she once deflected questions from friends who were curious about her experience. She recalled a moment with a friend group when she was directly asked if she was a virgin. “I said, ‘I love the D.’ I said that,” she disclosed.
She also connected her early choices to her upbringing and faith. Lizzo explained that when she was a teenager in church, she and her friends made a pact not to have sex before marriage, a commitment that stayed with her longer than she expected. “When we were teenagers at my church,” she said, “we all made a pact that we wouldn’t do anything before marriage.”
She added that fear and insecurity also played a role in how she navigated those years. “And then, I was just so scared. Like, nobody wanted to kiss me.”
Beyond her virginity story, Lizzo also revealed another late milestone in her personal life, sharing that she did not have her first kiss until she was 21, further highlighting how differently her journey unfolded compared to others around her.
Now, years later, the Grammy-winning artist reflects on those experiences with a sense of release, noting how freeing it feels to speak openly about something she once kept hidden.
