Kamala Harris walked out to Beyoncé’s ‘Freedom’ for her first speech as presidential candidate since Biden dropped out.
Harris had a little extra boost when she addressed her campaign staff one day after President Joe Biden endorsed her as the party’s candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
Beyoncé’s team reportedly granted the vice president permission to use the song during her presidential campaign.
Beyoncé has long advocated for social justice and equality. “Freedom,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, is a powerful anthem from her critically acclaimed album “Lemonade.”
It earned a 2017 Grammy nomination for best rap/sung performance, while “Lemonade” won Best Urban Contemporary Album and was up for Album of the Year and Best Music Film.
The song’s themes of resiliency and liberty strike a chord with many people, making it an excellent choice for a campaign focused on breaking down barriers and championing change.
All eyes have been on Vice President Kamala Harris since President Joe Biden announced on Sunday (July 21) that he will withdraw from the 2024 presidential election and endorse Harris to run as the Democratic nominee in his place.
Harris boldly walked into the campaign staff meeting in Wilmington, Del., on Monday (July 22) to Beyoncé’s “Freedom.”
A source close to Harris told CNN that Kamala Harris’s team obtained permission from Beyoncé’s representatives to use the song throughout her presidential campaign.
While Beyoncé has not publicly supported or commented on Harris’ presidential campaign, her mother, Tina Knowles, endorsed Harris on Sunday, shortly after Biden’s announcement.
“New, Youthful, Sharp, energy !!!!” Knowles posted a photo of herself alongside Harris from her daughter’s Renaissance World Tour on her Instagram.
The caption continued, “Putting personal Ego, power and fame aside. That is the definition of a great leader. Thank you, President Biden, for your service and your leadership. Go Vice President Kamala Harris for President. Let’s Go”
Beyoncé has a track record of supporting Democratic candidates. In 2013, she sang the National Anthem at President Barack Obama’s inauguration. In 2016, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z headlined a Clinton pre-election concert in Cleveland, Ohio, with backup dancers dressed in blue pantsuits to honor Hilary Clinton.
In 2020, Beyoncé endorsed the Biden-Harris ticket and encouraged her Instagram followers to vote.
