Business Coach Renee Bobb Shares Secrets To Building Thriving Business On A Budget

by Gee NY

Renee Bobb, a Black entrepreneur and business coach, has made a significant impact by helping aspiring entrepreneurs succeed without breaking the bank.

She stressed the importance of financial planning and strategic funding through her training programs.

Here’s how Renee Bobb’s advice can guide you to entrepreneurial success.

Renee Bobb, known for her role as the national training director at Bunker Labs, a nonprofit supporting veteran entrepreneurs, co-founded the Breaking Barriers in Entrepreneurship program.

This eight-week training initiative helps veteran entrepreneurs from underrepresented communities secure financial stability for their businesses.

Bobb stresses the importance of creating a budget not just for your business, but also for personal finances.

“The biggest mistake aspiring entrepreneurs make is launching a business without knowing if there are customers who will buy their product or service,” she explains.

She advises thorough market research and budgeting to ensure a sustainable business launch.

Practical Steps to Financial Stability

According to Bobb, the first step for new entrepreneurs is to conduct research and identify opportunities aligned with their passions.

“Create a startup budget to understand the costs of launching and running your business for six months to a year,” she says.

Additionally, she highlights the necessity of having multiple income sources to support your household while building your business.

Reflecting on her own journey, Bobb shares:

“When I first launched my company, I worked full-time and took temp jobs until I had an emergency fund and savings to run the business. It was challenging, but my dream of being a business owner kept me motivated.”

Exploring Funding Options

Bobb advises exploring various funding options beyond traditional bank loans. She encourages applying for grants, highlighting the increase in grant opportunities for Black entrepreneurs.

“Someone has to win the grant, so why not you?” she says.

She also recommends seeking strategic partnerships to bring in capital, industry expertise, and mentorship.

Tips for Successful Grant Applications

Bobb’s grant application process, which has secured funding from the Tennessee Titans and American Express’s “100 for 100” program, includes being clear about the purpose of the grant, conducting extensive research to find suitable grants, and creating a detailed grant funding budget.

For additional guidance, Bobb suggests the Earn Your Leisure podcast by Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, and the Brown Ambition podcast by Mandi Woodruff and Tiffany Aliche.

She also recommends reading “The Wealth Choice” by Dennis Kimbro and “Rise and Grind” by Daymond John for valuable business strategies.

Local resources such as the Black Chamber of Commerce, the National Minority Supplier Development Council, and the Minority Business Development Agency offer free business coaching and mentorship.
