Devastating news is hitting the music world. Big Freedia, the iconic “Queen of Bounce,” has announced the heartbreaking passing of her partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst. He was just 38 years old. Freedia shared the sad news with an emotional post on Instagram on Thursday, May 15th, revealing that Devon died due to “complications from diabetes.”

“I’m devastated to have to announce that today my partner of 20 years, Devon Hurst, passed away peacefully due to complications from diabetes, surrounded by his loving family,” the 47-year-old New Orleans artist wrote. Her words convey the depth of her grief as she paid tribute to the man who stood by her side for two decades.

In her heartfelt message, Freedia highlighted the many loved ones Devon leaves behind: his mother, Chareen; sisters Meshonda, Stephany, and Jayla; brothers Steven, Stephon, and Malcolm; his daughter Zyrielle; son Davone; and numerous nieces and nephews. She also poignantly included herself, Freddie Ross Jr., among those who will deeply miss him.

“He will deeply missed by everyone in this community who knew him and loved him,” Freedia stated, acknowledging the impact Devon had on those around him. Finding solace in their faith, she added, “We take comfort in knowing he is free from any pain and suffering and is at peace in the loving arms of Jesus Christ.”

Concluding her post, Freedia respectfully asked for prayers and privacy during this incredibly difficult time. She also informed fans that details regarding public services would be announced in the future.

In a June 2023 interview with AnOther Mag, Freedia openly spoke about her belief in love at first sight, revealing that she experienced it with Devon. At the time, they had been together for nearly two decades. “It’s our love that’s kept us together,” she shared, offering a glimpse into the strong bond they shared. Their relationship was also visible to fans through Freedia’s reality TV shows, including “Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce” and “Big Freedia Means Biz,” where Devon made appearances.

Following Freedia’s announcement, an outpouring of love and support flooded her social media. Fellow musicians and friends offered their condolences. Grammy winner Monica wrote, “My God @bigfreedia we are praying and lifting yours and his families name,” adding, “May God grant you all peace that surpassed understanding ❤️ we love you !!!” Faith Evans also shared a message of sympathy, writing, “My prayers & condolences to you boo.”

Just last month, Freedia released her single “Sunday Best” with Tamar Braxton, a track from her upcoming gospel album. This joyous new music now arrives amidst a period of profound personal loss.

Devon Hurst may have largely remained out of the spotlight, but his 20-year partnership with Big Freedia was a significant anchor in her life. He was a constant presence throughout her career’s highs and lows, from her musical success to her television endeavors and advocacy work.

The Hurst and Ross families have requested privacy as they navigate this time of mourning.
