Meet Miko Pickett: Mullins’ First Black Female Mayor Paving the Way for Inclusive Leadership

by Gee NY

History was made in Mullins, South Carolina, as Miko Pickett was sworn in as the city’s first Black female mayor on Tuesday.

Pickett’s election marks a transformative moment for the community, reflecting both progress and a renewed commitment to inclusive leadership.

“This moment means everything,” Pickett shared. My sweet mother-in-law raised her seven kids in Jim Crow America. It’s a challenge I take on proudly and with great excitement.”

While Pickett, a resident of Mullins since 2016, didn’t grow up in the city, her dedication to the community is undeniable.

As the founder of T4C Consulting and co-founder and CEO of Pick 42 Management, she has spent years leveraging her expertise to empower others.

Her leadership of the Pick 42 Foundation further solidifies her reputation as a champion for local causes, addressing food insecurity, disaster recovery, and community-focused initiatives.

A Legacy of Service

Pickett’s career began with a 20-year tenure as an IT executive in corporate America. In 2019, she retired to dedicate herself to community work fully.

Her efforts have included running for state office and advocating for civic engagement through her “Use Their Vs” initiative, which encourages visibility, voice, and voting.

A graduate of the James E. Clyburn Fellowship program, Pickett currently serves on the board of Women in Philanthropy.

Her journey reflects a steadfast commitment to building stronger communities and creating opportunities for all.

Vision for Mullins

As mayor, Pickett plans to continue the legacy of outgoing Mayor Robert Woodbury, focusing on completing infrastructure projects such as constructing new parks.

Her goals also include expanding affordable housing options and implementing community policing initiatives to strengthen trust between law enforcement and residents.

Pickett’s leadership style, described as both tenacious and compassionate, resonates deeply with those who know her. “The people of Mullins will see she is the most caring and understanding person they will ever meet,” said her husband, Darius Pickett.

A Life of Balance and Joy

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Pickett values family above all else. She and her husband of over 36 years, Dominic Cathcart Pickett, Sr., have built a life filled with love, raising four children and celebrating six grandchildren.

She enjoys Southern living, traveling, line dancing, and music—a testament to her ability to find joy amid her many responsibilities.

Miko Pickett’s journey to mayor is not just a personal triumph but a community milestone, signaling a brighter, more inclusive future for Mullins.
