Woman Leaves 6-Figure Job To Build A $379,000 Food Business: Here’s Her Story

by Gee NY

Ever thought about turning your passion into a thriving business? Teyoshe Smith did just that, transitioning from a high-paying corporate job to running a successful charcuterie business, Bite by Bite & Co., generating $379,000 in sales in 2023.

A charcuterie business specializes in creating and selling charcuterie boards, which are assortments of cured meats, cheeses, and often other accompaniments such as fruits, nuts, bread, and spreads.

These boards are typically designed for snacking or as appetizers and are popular for events, parties, and gatherings.

Teyoshe Smith once shared that her culinary journey began at family gatherings, where her grandmother and aunts prepared delicious meals.

These experiences ignited her passion for food. As an adult, she started making charcuterie boards for family events, and two years ago, she decided to share her love for Southern comfort food with the community.

The Birth of Bite by Bite & Co.

Teyoshe began her business as a side hustle from her kitchen table.

She created elaborate charcuterie spreads using fresh herbs, homemade cheese balls, cheese dips, and local honey.

Encouraged by her sister-in-law, Teyoshe tested the market on Facebook Marketplace over Mother’s Day Weekend in 2022, selling out 25 boxes in just two days.

Transitioning to Full-Time Entrepreneurship

Balancing her job as a project manager at Capital One, her small business, and family life became overwhelming. After a year of juggling both, Teyoshe left her six-figure job to focus on her charcuterie business full-time.

This decision paid off, with sales skyrocketing from $84,000 in 2022 to $379,000 in 2023.

Expansion and Future Goals

In just two years, Teyoshe hired 11 team members and opened a second location in Atlanta, Georgia. Bite by Bite & Co. now offers nationwide shipping, in-person and virtual workshops, and a corporate product line, securing contracts with catering companies and 1-800-Flowers.

The business also sells signature cheese dips and cheese balls in stores and wineries in Virginia and Georgia and offers them wholesale nationwide.

Building a Franchise

Teyoshe aims to see Bite by Bite & Co. locations across the country. She is developing standard procedures and recipes for franchising and interviewing potential franchisees to ensure the right partnerships.

Her top seller, Garlic Feta Cheese Dip, exemplifies her success with its unique blend of fresh basil, garlic, pistachios, and honey.

Teyoshe Smith’s journey from corporate America to culinary success is an inspiring example of turning passion into profit. Her story shows that with dedication and strategic planning, you too can build a thriving business.
