Latto has etched her name into music history, becoming the first female artist to receive the prestigious title of “Trapper of the Year.”
The title, a prestigious honor in the hip-hop community, was bestowed upon her by none other than T.I., the King of the South, on behalf of the Trap Music Museum in Atlanta.
Latto has been clocking achievements since the release of her third studio album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea, on August 9. The 22-track album features several musical guest stars, including Megan Thee Stallion, Coco Jones, and Cardi B.
Earlier this month, Latto made history as the first solo female rapper from Atlanta to top Billboard’s Top Rap Albums chart with her latest album, Sugar Honey Iced Tea.
The 25-year-old star’s latest effort also landed her at number 15 on Billboard’s 200 Chart, her highest debut to date, making her the second female emcee to achieve both this year.
Latto signed with RCA Records in 2020, following the success of her breakthrough single “B**ch From Da South.” She went on to release a remix with rappers Saweetie and Trina. Two years later, Latto achieved mainstream success with “Big Energy.” The song sampled Mariah Carey’s 1995 single “Fantasy.”
In the interview, Latto revealed that Carey called her management team and spoke with the rapper for over an hour. The conversation eventually led to the March 2022 release of “Big Energy (Remix).”
The “Trapper of the Year” award honors an artist who has made a significant contribution to the trap music genre through their music, influence, and cultural impact. Latto’s meteoric rise to fame, combined with her undeniable talent and authentic portrayal of trap culture, made her the obvious choice for this coveted award this year.
She takes over from Future, who held the title in 2023 and has been regarded as trap music royalty for nearly a decade.
During an interview with Billboard, Latto discussed her thoughts on the new wave of ladies in the rap industry while thanking the originals who have shown her so much love.
Latto is set to hit the road this fall with her first North American Sugar Honey Iced Tea Tour, with special guests Mariah The Scientist and Karrahbooo. The tour starts on October 25 in Tampa, FL, and will stop in major cities like New York, Washington, DC, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
