Former Miss North Carolina Carrie Everett Battles Aggressive Cancer: ‘Holding on to God’

by Gee NY

Just a year after capturing the Miss North Carolina 2024 crown, 21-year-old Carrie Everett is facing a challenge far greater than any pageant stage—an aggressive cancer diagnosis.

Everett, who handed over her crown in June, began experiencing troubling health symptoms shortly after. What started as bloating and persistent coughing escalated quickly. Initially misdiagnosed with pneumonia, further scans revealed masses on her pelvis. A biopsy confirmed signet ring cell carcinoma, a rare and advanced form of cancer.

“I was shocked. I was also very scared because you hear that word and think of all these stories. I knew my life was going to change,” Everett told ABC11.

A Difficult Journey

Everett spent three weeks in the hospital, relying on oxygen and machines, and had to relearn how to walk. Despite the physical toll, she continues to fight with faith and resilience.

Her mother, Mary Everett, has been by her side every step of the way, sharing how their family has leaned on faith during this trial:

“The Bible says it is better to put your trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. The prognosis wasn’t good. We turn our attention to God.”

Carrie recently completed her third round of chemotherapy. In solidarity, her family shaved their heads, and loved ones launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover medical costs as her mother, her primary caregiver, is unable to work.

Putting Life on Pause, But Not Her Spirit

Currently on a break from her studies at North Carolina Central University, Everett still carries the same optimism that helped her win the pageant crown.

“I love my Eagle family and its ‘Eagle Pride, Amplified. I know we’re going to whoop those Aggies. So, how about that!” she said with a smile.

She hopes her story serves as a reminder for women to advocate for themselves when something feels off with their health.

“I’m holding on to God, keeping the faith and attitude of worship and prayer because I believe I’m healed already in Jesus’ name,” Everett said.

Community Support and Strength

The Everett family continues to ask for prayers and support as Carrie undergoes treatment. Her journey has become a powerful story of faith, determination, and community love.
