A New Iberia, Louisiana mother has been arrested following an incident at New Iberia Senior High School (NISH) in which she is accused of disguising herself as a student, gaining access to campus, and becoming involved in a physical altercation with a student.
Sabrina Silas, 37, was taken into custody by the New Iberia Police Department last week and booked into the Iberia Parish Jail on charges of cruelty to a juvenile, unlawful disruption of the operation of a school, and disturbing the peace. Jail records indicate that Silas is no longer in custody as of Friday morning, Jan. 16, 2026.
The incident occurred last week Wednesday morning and stemmed from a reported ongoing conflict between Silas’ daughter and another student. According to accounts provided to local media, Silas allegedly entered the school during morning drop-off hours, bypassed campus security, and intervened during a hallway fight involving her daughter.
Superintendent of Iberia Parish Schools, Heath Hulin, said school staff immediately responded once the adult was identified.
“The person tried to gain entry to the school and kind of pushed her way past our security point,” Hulin said. “We had to go to our second layer of defense and call the resource officer at that point.”
School officials said administrators followed Silas within seconds of her entering the building, notified the school resource officer, and escorted her back to the front of the campus, where she was apprehended by police.
Hulin explained that the busy nature of morning drop-off made it less alarming initially to see a parent near the entrance.
“It’s not uncommon for parents to be in the drop-off area in the morning,” he said. “There were lots of people around, so seeing a parent near the front of the school did not immediately raise alarm.”
In an email sent to parents and guardians, the Iberia Parish School System confirmed that a parent became involved during a student altercation and was promptly removed and arrested.
“This situation was resolved quickly due to the swift response of school personnel and local law enforcement,” the statement read. “The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is our highest priority.”
District officials say the investigation is ongoing and that campus procedures are being reviewed to strengthen school security measures. Superintendent Hulin also stressed that such behavior would not be tolerated.
“In addition to legal action, this will result in a ban from all school campuses and school- or district-sponsored activities,” he said.
The case has sparked broader discussion among parents and educators about bullying, parental intervention, and school security, as authorities continue to examine how the adult was able to access the campus.
