She broke barriers in an era when Black women weren’t expected to be seen—or heard—in America’s newsrooms. Barbara Boyd, a legendary news reporter and community advocate, is once again in the spotlight—not for a headline she wrote, but for her radiant personality, active lifestyle, and inspiring outlook at 96 years old.
The retired journalist is going viral across TikTok and Instagram, thanks to a touching video shared by her daughter when Boyd was 94. In it, the two discuss Boyd’s full and energetic daily routine, revealing how she continues to thrive long after leaving the newsroom.
“She’s not on a walker. She’s very active,” her daughter says proudly in the clip. “She still has friends that come and get her and keep her running around town.”
A Legacy of Firsts in the Newsroom
Before her internet fame, Boyd was already a history maker. She stepped into the world of journalism at a time when the industry was overwhelmingly white and male. In doing so, she not only reported the news but helped shape how future generations would see themselves reflected in it.
Boyd became one of the first Black women to work as a professional television news reporter in her region, covering stories that mattered to marginalized communities long before diversity and inclusion became corporate mandates. Her presence in the newsroom wasn’t just rare—it was revolutionary.
Her work inspired a new generation of Black journalists who saw in her a model of excellence and resilience. And though retired, she remains a beacon of wisdom and energy, showing the world that the story doesn’t end at retirement—it evolves.
How She Stays Sharp and Stylish at 96
In the now-viral video, Boyd credits her enduring vitality to surrounding herself with younger friends, staying mentally and physically active, and maintaining a youthful mindset.
“Most of my high school and college friends have gone on, but I’ve found a new group of friends who’ve sort of adopted me as mom,” she says with a smile. “They’re anywhere from 57 to 70, and they take me everywhere. Anything’s going on—‘Mom, you ready to go?’ Yeah, I’m ready to go!”
From dance exercise classes on Mondays to playing bridge and participating in fashion shows, Boyd’s calendar is packed.
“I just did a commercial,” she says, casually. “If you’re coming up with something, yeah—I’m ready to go. I’m not sitting at home every day.”
Boyd also shares that her daughter keeps her updated on cultural trends and technology.
“Mommy, that’s not on TikTok. That’s not really a thing anymore,” she recalls her daughter saying. “I still say ‘icebox’—some things never change.”
A Message Beyond the Likes
Boyd’s popularity on social media isn’t just about her youthful appearance or sprightly spirit. Her story resonates because it challenges outdated narratives about aging, race, and what it means to live fully.
“I think a lot of older people don’t have anybody to take interest,” Boyd reflects in the video. “And I think that’s my plus—people take interest in me. And I don’t dress like an old woman either.”
With over nine decades of life experience, including a trailblazing career, Boyd is now a digital sensation—but her influence started long before TikTok ever existed.
More Than Just a Trend
Barbara Boyd’s story is a timely reminder of the legacy Black women carry and the joy they deserve to celebrate. Her message? Stay active. Stay connected. Keep learning. And always, always make room to dance.
