Jackson State University has officially named Denise Jones Gregory as its 14th president, elevating her from the interim role she assumed following the resignation of Marcus Thompson in May 2025.
The announcement brings stability to the institution after a year marked by leadership uncertainty, and it has been met with strong enthusiasm from students, alumni, and community leaders.
Gregory, a 1994 graduate of Jackson State University, described her appointment as a “full circle moment,” stressing her deep personal and professional ties to the university.

With more than two decades of experience in higher education, including leadership roles in academic affairs, operations, and faculty development, she steps into the presidency with both institutional knowledge and a clear strategic vision.
Students on campus say Gregory’s leadership style has already made a meaningful impact. Graduating senior Jarek Peterson, who has worked closely with university administrators, expressed confidence in her ability to lead, highlighting her authenticity and student-centered approach.
Others echoed similar sentiments, noting her accessibility and personal engagement.
“She makes students feel seen and known,” Peterson said, adding that her presence fosters a sense of belonging on campus.
Transfer student Teryn Winn described Gregory as “personable” and “energetic,” saying her consistent interaction with students has strengthened trust across the university community.
Her background as a former provost and vice president of academic affairs, along with prior faculty roles at Samford University and Tuskegee University, further reinforces her academic leadership credentials.
Community stakeholders have also welcomed the appointment, though some have raised concerns about the selection process. Mark Dawson, chairman of The 1877 Project, praised Gregory as a leader of “high integrity” who understands the needs of students and families, but criticized the lack of transparency from the Mississippi Institutions of Higher Learning during the selection process.
Despite those concerns, Dawson acknowledged that the board ultimately “got it right” with Gregory’s appointment. Meanwhile, John Horhn underscored the broader significance of her leadership, noting that Jackson State plays a vital role in the city’s economic development and workforce preparation.
He expressed confidence that Gregory’s leadership would strengthen the university’s impact both locally and beyond.
Gregory now becomes the 10th leader of the university in just 16 years, a statistic that underscores the importance of stability at the helm. Her appointment signals a potential turning point for Jackson State, as students and alumni alike express optimism about the institution’s future direction.
