JT shut down harmful speculation about her appearance after a TikTok user accused her of skin bleaching.

Another day, another wild internet debate. This time, City Girls’ JT is caught in the crossfire of social media speculation, with TikTok users accusing her of bleaching her skin. But the rap star is having none of it.

JT recently hopped on TikTok for an entirely different reason. She wanted advice on her smiley piercing, a lip accessory she’s rocked since 2023, specifically on how to keep her hoop from falling out. Instead of finding the piercing tips she was looking for, she stumbled upon an accusation that has followed many Black women in the spotlight: skin bleaching.

In a now-viral response video, the No Bars rapper fired back at accusations that she has lightened her skin:

“Do y’all ever talk about y’all self on this app?! Do y’all even care about y’all own self, or do you only care about people that’s doing better than y’all? Stop talking about me! Unless it’s about music!”

Her reaction is far from surprising. For years, social media has been obsessed with speculating about celebrities’ skin tones, often accusing them of altering their complexion anytime they appear with a radiant glow. JT is just the latest in a long line of Black female stars to be subjected to this tired and harmful discourse.

Remember when Beyoncé set the internet ablaze in 2023 during the Renaissance screening? With her platinum blonde hair and a stunning silver outfit, she looked as flawless as ever—but instead of admiring the look, social media went into a frenzy, accusing her of skin lightening. The chatter got so bad that her mother, Tina Knowles, had to step in, posting a lengthy Instagram caption urging people to stop spreading false narratives.

Serena Williams has also been dragged into similar conversations, with social media users questioning her complexion in certain photos. Each time, these accusations ignore the reality of lighting, makeup, and photography while fueling unnecessary and damaging rumors about Black beauty standards.

No Black woman should have to defend or justify her skin tone.
