Tracee Ellis Ross is opening up about her relationship with her father following his appearance with her at the Cold Copy premiere in Tribeca, New York.

The Los Angeles native is the daughter of the iconic Diana Ross and Robert Ellis Silberstein, a renowned music manager in Hollywood. Ellis Ross would eventually follow in her parents’ footsteps to pursue a career in Hollywood – and has done an incredible job thus far.

In a recent interview with Metro UK, the 50-year-old said that while her parents have influenced her decision to pursue fame, she is now at a point where she doesn’t run ideas by them as it relates to her career.

“No, I’m 50 now – I kind of make my decisions on my own,” she joked, adding that “My dad came. He’s in the city so it’s a nice way for us to see each other.”

In her latest project, Cold Copy, she dished about how her role in the film was very different from the roles she’s played in the past. She also expressed gratitude to her cast and crew for their unwavering diligence to make the film a success.

“[They were] so great,” she said “It’s a beautifully written script so it was really exciting to be able to lean into a character like that.”

According to the film’s synopsis, “Cold Copy is a character-driven thriller that tackles one of the most pertinent issues of our day: our enslavement to narrative.”

It continues: “[The film] follows journalism student Mia Scott as she tries to win over the ruthless and influential Diane Heger – tiger of an interviewer and host of The Night Report – to get a segment aired on the show. But Diane’s influence and Mia’s thirst for success are a terrible cocktail, and under Diane’s eye, Mia soon feels compelled to play fast and loose with the truth, twisting the tragic story of her innocent subject, cocky teen Igor Nowak, to make it pop.”

Ellis is an industry veteran whose breakout role came when she was tapped to play Joan in Girlfriends back in 2000. She would later appear on CSI and Reed Between the Lines.

Then another big break came when she played Rainbow Johnson in Black-ish, which ran for eight seasons until 2022. She would eventually win a Golden Globe for best actress in a TV series musical or comedy for the character on the show and won several NAACP awards.

Reflecting on her career, Ellis Ross said that both of her parents were pivotal in her current successes.

“I gotta tell you, it’s both,” she told Variety in a recent interview. “I get my sense of humor from my dad. He and I are so much alike.”

She continued: “I spent more time with my mom. She was my sole parent for the majority of my childhood. I’m so much like my mother and I’m so much like my father. I don’t know who influenced me more. But I think my career has been more influenced by my dad.”
