Content creator Janée Smith is sparking discussion online after sharing her perspective on polyamorous relationships, arguing that public conversations often overlook the emotional bonds formed between women within those relationships.
In a video posted to Instagram, Smith challenged what she described as a common misconception that poly relationships primarily benefit men while ignoring the experiences and connections shared by the women involved.
“When people think about poly relationships, they think about how much the man is benefiting,” Smith said in the voice-over. “But not a lot of times are they thinking about the women who actually chose to come together in this relationship.”

Her comments accompanied a montage of images showing women appearing affectionate, joyful, and emotionally connected, reinforcing her argument that poly relationships can foster companionship and community among partners.
“The bond that the women create, the sisterhood that the women create, the love and the energy and the connection that the women create,” Smith continued. “We benefit so much from this and it’s not just about the man.”
The video quickly generated conversation across social media platforms, where users debated the realities, benefits, and challenges of polyamorous and nontraditional relationships. Some commenters agreed with Smith’s framing, saying emotional support systems among women are rarely acknowledged in discussions about poly dynamics.
Others remained skeptical, arguing that unequal power dynamics can still exist in some relationships marketed as empowering or communal.
Polyamory, typically defined as engaging in consensual romantic relationships with multiple partners, has become increasingly visible in mainstream conversations over the past decade, particularly through social media, podcasts, and reality television. Advocates often stress themes of communication, emotional honesty, and chosen community, while critics raise questions about long-term emotional sustainability and relationship balance.
Smith’s post reflects a broader shift in online discourse where younger creators are openly discussing alternative relationship structures and challenging traditional assumptions about romance, partnership, and family dynamics.
“This is really not talked about enough,” Smith wrote in the caption accompanying the video.
