Woman Alleges She Was Raped By Popular Miami Promoter Devann Yao: ‘The System Failed Me’

A Miami woman who goes by Joy (@joythejit on Instagram) has taken to social media to speak out after learning that charges were dropped in her sexual assault case against well-known Miami nightlife promoter Devann “Drama” Yao, who now faces multiple allegations of sexual assault in South Florida.

In a video shared on June 3, Joy stated:

“I was drugged and raped by a well-known Miami club promoter on my 21st birthday and the system failed me.”

Joy identifies Yao as the man who allegedly assaulted her, known in Miami club circles by his alias “Jauma Miami.” According to her, despite the severity of her claims and other reported victims, the state attorney’s office ultimately dropped her case before it went to trial, citing insufficient evidence for conviction.

“They gave up before we even went to trial,” she said, expressing devastation at what she called a failure of the criminal justice system to fight on behalf of survivors.

Yao, who had cultivated a following of over 13,000 on Instagram by advertising access to top venues and frequently appearing in photos with young women, has been under investigation for multiple sexual assault allegations, according to a 2024 Local 10 News report. He currently faces at least two criminal cases involving allegations of sexual battery of physically helpless victims — and was out on bond from a previous arrest when another alleged rape was reported.

Court and police records obtained by Local 10 (local10.com) detail how a woman told investigators she met Yao via the BLK dating app in January 2024. He reportedly sent her an Uber, took her out drinking at several venues, and then raped her while she was unconscious in his apartment. A rape kit was completed days later and DNA evidence reportedly linked Yao to the assault. These findings led to additional charges filed in July 2024.

Despite the gravity of the allegations and the forensic evidence presented in other cases, Joy said that prosecutors declined to pursue her case. This decision prompted her to launch a public call to action for legislative change.

“Devon took things that I could never get back, like my virginity, my 21st birthday, and that night,” she said. “But the one thing he didn’t take was my drive to make a difference and protect other women in the future.”

Joy now says she is working to introduce federal legislation that would establish greater protections for women in nightclub environments, particularly against unregulated club promoters. She is encouraging others to share their stories to support her efforts in taking the matter to Congress.

Yao is currently under house arrest, a development that Joy addressed in a separate Instagram post calling him an “alleged serial rapist” and linking to resources to support women’s safety.

Neither Yao nor his attorneys have publicly commented on the allegations. Local police and prosecutors have not issued updated statements regarding the status of the ongoing cases.
