Dr. Bobbi Peterson, a second-generation HBCU-educated dentist, is dedicated to upholding her family legacy by making significant contributions to Black history and advancing health within the Black community.

Under the motto “Bigger Is Better,” Peterson introduced a groundbreaking toothbrush named “Big Mouth,” characterized by its innovative design and exceptional functionality.

Notably, she stands as the first Black woman to design an electronic, battery-operated toothbrush, marking a historic milestone in the field.

Drawing from her experience as the proprietor of Aces Braces, a dental practice in Brooklyn, New York, Peterson actively promotes oral health awareness through various initiatives, including internships and free orthodontic evaluations.

Her commitment extends beyond clinical practice; she authored a children’s book titled “Tanner’s Teeth,” celebrating the achievements of the first African American dentist.

In a 2022 interview with Black Enterprise, Peterson shares insights into the inspiration behind “Big Mouth” and reflects on her role as a second-generation trailblazer.

The genesis of “Big Mouth” stemmed from Peterson’s upbringing and familial influences. As the youngest of seven siblings, she affectionately earned the nickname “Mighty Mouth” from her mother, a testament to her outspoken nature.

Raised by a dentist father and a nurse educator mother, Peterson imbibed a deep-seated appreciation for oral care and holistic health advocacy.

Her journey to create “Big Mouth” was propelled by a desire to serve her community better. Despite facing initial skepticism from potential collaborators, Peterson remained steadfast in her vision, ultimately deciding to forge her path independently.

The name “Big Mouth” pays homage to Peterson’s familial roots and embodies a spirit of empowerment. Rooted in the vibrant culture of Newark, New Jersey, where her family hails from, the brand symbolizes resilience and pride.

By embracing the ethos of “bigger is better,” Peterson aims to challenge societal norms and redefine standards of excellence in oral care.

Reflecting on her historic achievement as the first Black woman to design an electric toothbrush, Peterson expresses immense pride and gratitude.

However, she is confident in the ongoing process to dismantle barriers and create more opportunities for women of color in all industries.

Looking ahead, Peterson envisions a legacy defined by empowerment and inclusivity.
