The honor will be presented tonight at The Anthem during the annual Celebration of Service to America Awards.
A Legacy of Artistry and Advocacy

Graves-Montgomery—an Emmy and Grammy winner celebrated for her iconic performances at the Metropolitan Opera, Kennedy Center, and global stages—has dedicated her career to uplifting emerging artists through her Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF). Founded to bridge gaps in classical music access, DGF’s initiatives include:
- Shared Voices Program: Partnerships between HBCUs and top conservatories to nurture underrepresented talent.
- Hidden Voices Initiative: Research and performances spotlighting overlooked Black composers and musicians in American history.
“Denyce’s work embodies the spirit of this award,” said NABLF President Michelle Duke. “She’s not just a trailblazer onstage—she’s opening doors for the next generation.”
Building an Inclusive Future
The foundation’s impact has garnered support from the Ford Foundation, Library of Congress, and Smithsonian Institution, amplifying its mission to reshape classical music’s landscape.
Why It Matters: As classical music confronts historic inequities, Graves-Montgomery’s leadership offers a blueprint for mentorship, representation, and institutional change.
