Carolynn Bain’s Afrori Books Is Celebrating Black Literature and Community Empowerment

by Gee NY

In a world where Black authors often find themselves relegated to small, overlooked sections of bookstores, Carolynn Bain’s vision for Afrori Books has provided a bold and much-needed platform for Black writers in the UK.

What began from frustration with the lack of visibility for Black authors has now evolved into the largest selection of exclusively Black books in the country.

Afrori Books was founded in response to the scarcity and underrepresentation of Black authors in mainstream bookstores. Carolynn, a passionate book lover, found herself repeatedly frustrated by the tiny, often ignored “BAME” section that Black authors were confined to.

For Carolynn, the journey to find books by Black writers was often tedious and time-consuming, a challenge she felt deeply as both a reader and an advocate for the literary community.

“Surely, Black authors deserved more than that?” Afrori Books writes on its website. “It was hard enough to become an author, but it was even harder to be a Black author.”

Determined to create change, Carolynn launched Afrori Books with a mission to provide a dedicated space for Black authors and their stories. She envisioned a bookstore that would not only showcase the incredible talents of Black writers but also offer a range of genres and affordable prices.

This dream became a reality when Afrori Books partnered with the UK’s largest book wholesaler, offering an extensive collection of books by Black authors across various genres.

Since opening its doors in October 2021, Afrori Books has quickly become a cornerstone of the UK’s literary landscape. In April 2023, the bookstore relocated to its current home in The Brighthelm Centre, further solidifying its place as a community hub. But Afrori Books is more than just a bookstore; it’s a social enterprise dedicated to making a meaningful impact in the community.

“We’re not just about selling books,” Afrori Books explains on its About Us page. “We’re meeting the needs of the community in a variety of ways. From anti-racism training to workshops, events, and social clubs, we’re here to make a difference.”

Afrori Books offers a range of community-focused initiatives, including anti-racism training for adults, school clubs in Sussex, hair workshops, writers’ workshops, and even a women’s singing group and yoga sessions for women of color.

The bookstore is also home to a lively book festival, author events, music performances, and so much more.

Afrori’s commitment to creating a safe, inclusive space extends beyond literature. Visitors can enjoy a cup of reasonably priced tea or coffee while browsing the bookstore, enjoying the calm ambiance of a community-driven space that celebrates Black voices. The bookstore has truly become a sanctuary for those looking for both intellectual and emotional nourishment.

Afrori Books is not just a bookstore; it’s a movement!

Carolynn Bain’s dedication to empowering Black authors and supporting the community has created a space where people can connect, learn, and grow.

Through Afrori Books, Carolynn Bain has successfully turned frustration into action, giving Black authors the platform they have long deserved.
