Coco Gauff Subtly Takes A Swipe At Trump After Historic French Open Win

by Gee NY

Tennis phenom Coco Gauff lifted the French Open trophy on Saturday, June 7, and she also used the moment to lift the spirits of Americans who, she says, feel unsupported in today’s political climate, taking what many see as a subtle swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump.

The 20-year-old American champion claimed her second Grand Slam title with a gutsy comeback win over world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Roland Garros, becoming the first American woman to win the French Open singles title since Serena Williams in 2015.

In her emotional post-match interview, Gauff reflected on how political and social tensions in the U.S. have weighed on her, particularly after the recent election, which resulted in Trump becoming the Republican nominee and likely presidential contender once again.

“Obviously there’s a lot going on in our country right now,” Gauff said. “To be able to be a representation of people that look like me in America who maybe don’t feel as supported during this time period… it means a lot.”

Referencing a conversation with her mother after the election, Gauff revealed:

“She told me, ‘Try to win the tournament to give people something to smile for.’ That’s what I was thinking about today when holding the trophy.”

The tennis star doubled down on her patriotic pride while acknowledging its complexity in the current climate.

“Some people may feel some type of way about being patriotic,” she said. “But I’m definitely patriotic and proud to be American. I’m proud to represent the Americans that look like me.”

Gauff has previously hinted at her views through social media. After Trump’s election victory, she posted a reflective message on Instagram:

“Allow yourself to feel how you feel during tough times… especially today. Just lean on God with your concerns. He is the highest power. Remember that.” The post included a photo reading, “Replace anxiety with prayer.”

Unlike her 2023 U.S. Open triumph, which earned public congratulations from President Joe Biden and Barack Obama, Gauff’s French Open win has received no mention from Trump.

The former president spent the weekend at UFC 316 in New Jersey, where he appeared alongside UFC boss Dana White amid chants of “USA.”

Gauff’s career, already marked by accolades and social awareness, continues to draw comparisons to tennis legend Serena Williams—not just for her performance, but also for her poise, values, and voice.
