Two visionary women are breathing new life into Atlantic Beach, South Carolina’s historic Black-owned coastal gem. Dr. Tiffani Bailey Lash and Dr. Tashni-Ann Dubroy, co-founders of Tilair Capital, are spearheading efforts to preserve and revitalize this unique community.
Reviving “The Black Pearl”: A Mission Beyond Real Estate
Atlantic Beach, known as “The Black Pearl,” spans just four blocks along South Carolina’s coastline. Once a vibrant haven for Black travelers during segregation, it now faces a renaissance. Lash and Dubroy’s mission transcends mere property development.
Their goal is to safeguard Black land ownership and cultural heritage. “We’re not simply in Atlantic Beach to try to make a buck,” Dubroy explains. “We are there contributing to the preservation of land and ownership and culture.”
Serenity by Tilair: Luxury Meets Legacy
Central to their revitalization efforts is Serenity by Tilair, a seven-bedroom luxury rental property. This high-end accommodation offers more than just a place to stay. It provides an immersive experience in Atlantic Beach’s rich history.
Lash discovered Atlantic Beach during a family vacation. She recalls, “I walked the streets, met friendly neighbors, and it just felt like a happy community.” This experience inspired the creation of Serenity by Tilair.
Preserving Black Ownership in a Changing Landscape
Atlantic Beach stands out for its continued Black ownership. Dubroy notes, “90% or 92% of the ownership is still in the hands of Black people.” This statistic is remarkable given the history of Black land loss elsewhere.
However, challenges remain. The duo emphasizes the importance of educating future generations about legacy and ownership. They aim to protect these properties while ensuring they benefit the community economically and culturally.
A Call for Compassionate Investors and Community Builders
Lash and Dubroy are not working alone. They’re actively seeking like-minded investors and developers. “We want more people to fall in love with Atlantic Beach,” Dubroy says. They’re looking for individuals who understand the importance of preserving Black ownership.
Their vision extends beyond attracting investors. They’re calling for community involvement in storytelling, historic preservation, and future development. This inclusive approach aims to build Atlantic Beach from the ground up.
From Haircare to Community Care: A Journey of Entrepreneurship
The partnership between Lash and Dubroy began during their doctoral studies. Their shared entrepreneurial spirit led them to launch Tea and Honey Blends, a natural haircare brand. This venture paved the way for their current focus on community development.
Tilair Capital, their latest endeavor, reflects their evolving vision. It combines their business acumen with a deep commitment to community upliftment. Their journey showcases the power of friendship and shared values in driving meaningful change.
