Remains of Gay University Student Lured And Killed in 2022 Finally Discovered

by Gee NY

After nearly two years of uncertainty and heartbreak, the remains of Jimmie “Jay” Lee, a beloved University of Mississippi student and LGBTQ+ advocate, have been positively identified.

The discovery comes after Lee vanished in July 2022, with investigators alleging he was lured to his death by a man who was secretly involved with him.

The Mississippi State Crime Lab confirmed on Feb. 5 that remains found in Carroll County had been identified as those of Lee, according to the Oxford Police Department.

Lee had already been declared dead in absentia by a judge, but his family and community had held out hope for answers.

A Vibrant Life Cut Short

At just 20 years old, Lee was a well-known member of Ole Miss’ LGBTQ+ community, admired for his confidence and activism.

His disappearance sent shockwaves through the university and beyond, sparking vigils and outcry from supporters demanding justice.

Lee was last seen on July 8, 2022. Prosecutors believe he was lured back to the apartment of Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington Jr., a 24-year-old man who, they allege, had a secret sexual relationship with him. Authorities said Herrington messaged Lee to invite him over, where they believe he was murdered.

Court records reveal that investigators found explicit messages between the two. Herrington’s internet search history allegedly included disturbing queries such as how long it takes to strangle someone. Surveillance footage later showed Herrington removing a shovel and a wheelbarrow from his parents’ house the day after Lee disappeared, according to WMC-TV.

Herrington was tried for capital murder, but in December 2024, a mistrial was declared when jurors were unable to reach a verdict. His defense attorney had argued that, without a body, prosecutors lacked the evidence to convict. Now, with Lee’s remains recovered, legal experts anticipate renewed efforts to bring justice for the slain student.

The University of Mississippi expressed its condolences in the wake of the tragic discovery.

“The discovery of Jimmie ‘Jay’ Lee’s body is a solemn moment, and our thoughts are with Jay’s family and loved ones,” said Jacob Batte, Ole Miss’ director of news and media relations, in a statement.

Seeking Closure

For Lee’s family and the LGBTQ+ community, the identification of his remains brings both heartbreak and the hope that justice will finally be served.

Advocates stress that Lee’s case demonstrates the dangers faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly Black queer people, who are disproportionately targeted in violent crimes.
