Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKA) has officially expanded its global footprint with the chartering of its first graduate chapter in Ghana.
The move marks a milestone for the nearly 118-year-old international organization headquartered in Illinois, Chicago. The new chapter, Alpha Delta Psi Omega, was inaugurated in Accra on Jan. 16, 2026, during a private ceremony followed by a public luncheon that celebrated sisterhood, service, and community engagement.
The establishment of Alpha Delta Psi Omega makes Ghana the fourth African nation to host an AKA graduate chapter, joining Liberia, South Africa, and Nigeria — a testament to the organization’s ongoing commitment to global service and empowerment.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was founded on Jan. 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., making it the oldest Greek-letter sorority established by African American college-educated women. Over more than a century, AKA has grown into a global sisterhood with more than 360,000 initiated members across graduate and undergraduate chapters in nations including the United States, Canada, South Africa, Nigeria, Liberia, and beyond.
Led by International President and CEO Danette Anthony Reed, AKA’s mission continues to center around its founding pillars: promoting academic excellence, unity, ethical standards, alleviating issues affecting women and girls, and providing service to communities worldwide.
A New Hub for Service in West Africa
Members and supporters gathered in Accra on Jan.16 to formally usher in the Alpha Delta Psi Omega chapter. The ceremony drew sorors from across the region and highlighted Ghana’s strategic importance as a hub for AKA’s expanding International Region, which fosters connection, networking, and community impact projects across continents.
“This chapter in Ghana is more than an expansion — it is a homecoming and a bridge for sisterhood across generations and continents,” AKA officials stated in a post shared by Blacvolta on Instagram.
The new chapter is expected to launch community service initiatives, educational programs, and civic engagement projects in and around Accra in the coming months.
Legacy and Global Impact
AKA’s global presence has grown steadily over decades. Chapters in Africa have been part of the sorority’s broader international mission for years, with Liberian and South African chapters contributing to community development, scholarship, and leadership training. Ghana’s addition further solidifies AKA’s role in advancing service and empowerment across the African continent.
The historic event in Ghana not only celebrates AKA’s rich heritage but also reflects the organization’s evolving global strategy under its current “Soaring to Greater Heights of Service & Sisterhood” international program.
As graduate members in Ghana begin their own chapter journey, they carry forward over a century of sisterhood, scholarship, and service that has shaped communities worldwide.
